Look, just because you become an officer doesn't automatically mean that you are going to turn into Your Own Worst Nightmare. It's something you have to do because you need the money. You said yourself that people oftentimes do that - and that's fine. You're not the first friend I know that has gone into the military because of financial need. I don't think you should feel bad about this. I think you should look at it as some sort of an opportunity. Of course, it's a double-edged sword; doing what you don't believe in vs. doing what is necessary...but I think that you've come to a good enough stance within yourself to enter the armed forces and not compromise yourself. ^_^
